South Africa’s labour, business, community leaders and various stakeholders met in Midrand for a Jobs Summit. The Summit was convened in order to find ways in which unemployment in the country can be addressed. The jobs summit came up with a framework agreement which clearly stipulates how government and business will create more jobs. Motor manufacturing technicians
The Jobs Summit resolved to focus more on technical skills needed in the automotive and construction sector. The automotive sector, meanwhile, is currently drawing up a master plan which will increase SA assembled motor vehicles to 60%.This focus will translate into increased activity in the automotive industry and an increased pressure on the job market to supply skilled motor manufacturing technicians .
Green energy engineers
The Jobs Summit agreed that business and government will urgently come up with measures to address recurrent electricity outages in several municipalities which have been harming local economies. With South Africa’s nuclear energy plans put on hold, this will spark tremendous economic interest in alternative and renewable energy and relevant skills.
Tourism and hospitality professionals
South Africa’s tourism industry promises to keep on booming, with the government having recently announced intervention measures aimed at increasing the number of tourists visiting the country. Tourism is also one of the six key sectors that the South African Economic Growth Path focuses on, this will open more opportunities for Tourism and hospitality professionals. Internationally, too, tourism has been outpacing global economic growth for the past six years, with an estimate that it will continue to grow.

App developers are currently some of the most sought after professionals in ICT. But app development is an industry that is increasingly leaving the confines of mobile devices and infiltrating every other aspect of our lives—from our home to our car to our daily finances. Banking and financial institutions in South Africa are currently involved in managing the impact of the land reform program. This program will bring forth increased interest in the agriculture sector but also also increased demand for finance and agri-economists who are skilled in managing agriculture and land economics.

The Jobs Summit agreement includes a plan to improve the employment opportunities of school leavers through training at TVET colleges, with a particular focus on technical skills needed in the automotive, construction and hospitality sectors. This resolve will lead to an increased demand for technical teachers and lecturers in TVET colleges and other learning institutions.
Government at the Jobs Summit placed emphasis on the need to grow the manufacturing industry and committed to finalising a scrap metal export tax to ensure scrap metal products remain in SA to create value for the local industry. Growth in the manufacturing industry will certainly increase demand for engineers in various economic sectors and industries.
