Water Wednesday: Cold front to bring floods to Cape Town

Western Cape Dam levels have been steadily improving in the past two weeks and will most likely continue after the upcoming storm. The South African Weather Service warned that an intense cold front was headed to the province as well as the Namakwa District of the Northern Cape on 14 and 15 June.

Gales reaching up to 70km/h along the coastline can be expected. This means Cape Town will also be affected by heavy downpours leading to flooding over the city, the Winelands, the western parts of the Overberg and the West Coast District.

As the cold front makes its way to South-Eastern parts of the country on 16 June strong-to-near gale force winds at 50km/h can be expected along the Eastern Cape coast. Temperatures in the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape are set to drop significantly.

By the weekend, the cold front would’ve exited the country but cold dry air will spread to the interior of the country resulting in cold daytime conditions in Gauteng, North West Province, The Free State and Mpumalanga.

Here are the rainfall figures of the past 24 hours.
