Things you should know: How to avoid an accident

Here are a few simple steps to avoid an accident:

  1. Avoid construction areas, if possible.

There is often debris from construction sites that can chip your windshield and even cause it to shatter. If you spot something and aim to swerve out of the way, you risk driving into cars near to you on the road. You may even drive over debris unknowingly which could damage your tyres and other parts of the car. If you’re aware of construction happening on a road you usually take, opt to change your route instead.

  1. Don’t be quick to skip the song

If you don’t have an ultimate playlist on shuffle when you’re driving, then you should seriously reconsider the type of music you listen to. Taking your eyes off the road for a second to skip the song you’re listening to can have dire consequences. So, make sure the playlist you choose will leave you road-ready every day.

  1. Avoid your cellphone

If you’re not answering your phone hands-free via Bluetooth, then it’s best that you don’t answer it at all. Answering your phone will not only result in you getting distracted, but if your car hits a pothole, it could shift you into the next lane which can lead to an accident.

  1. Avoid tailgating

When we’re rushing off to an important meeting or if we’re late for an event, we can feel as if we can’t help but tailgate. However, this is extremely dangerous. If the driver in front of you comes to a sudden halt while you’re tailgating them, this could result in an accident and if you are traveling at a high speed, the accident can be serious.

  1. Keep your calm

Road rage is rife in South Africa but can be avoided. If a driver on the road angers you, do not use foul language or chase them out. Rather, choose to ignore them by either moving away from the vicinity or heading safely to a different lane.

Avoiding an accident is easier than you think. As much as driving safely is important, having car insurance is just as critical to ensure you’re covered in the unfortunate event of an accident.
