41-year-old man sentenced to life in prison for child rape

A man was recently convicted and sentenced to life in prison by the Johannesburg Regional Court on charges of child rape.

The court heard on 7 July that 41-year-old man (name withheld to protect the victim) repeatedly raped his niece in May 2015.

At the conclusion of the case, Johannesburg Central Cluster police said the accused was detained in February last year after it emerged that the 12-year-old girl was pregnant.

“The accused was arrested in Mayfair and charged with child rape after being pointed out by the 12-year-old girl,” said the spokesperson for Johannesburg Central Cluster police, Xoli Mbele.

“It was alleged that [he] had raped his niece several times during May 2015. The child’s mother noticed that the child’s stomach was swelling and took her to hospital [for an examination] on 28 December the same year – seven months after the incident.

“Doctors confirmed that the 12-year-old was pregnant. The victim told the court that her uncle had raped her on several occasions after coming back from school.”

The rapist will serve his sentence at Sun City prison.
