SuperSport United head coach, Stuart Baxter could be the next coach of Bafana Bafana

SuperSport United head coach, Stuart Baxter could be the next coach of Bafana Bafana if his negotiations with the South African Football Association (Safa) yield fruit.

Baxter, according to his current employers, is currently in talks with Safa on a possible return to the fold of the national team.

Stanley Matthews, CEO of SuperSport United, said they had given their blessings to the negotiations in the hope that, if successful, Baxter would only relinquish his duties at the club at the end of the current season.

“We have agreed on an early termination of Mr Baxter’s current contract and his appointment can only take effect after the current season and may commence his duties with Bafana as of 1 July,” Matthews said.

This could be the second time around in the Bafana camp for the Briton, as he first surfaced in South African football when he was hired by Safa for the job in May 2004 to November 2005, but was sacked after failing to qualify for the 2006 Fifa World Cup.

He then returned to local football when Kaizer Chiefs hired him as their head coach in 2012 and initially struggled to make an impact but the Englishman finally found his rhythm to become one of the club’s most successful coaches.

He jumped ship soon after the commencement of the 2016 season and joined SuperSport United to replace Gordon Ingesund. Baxter immediately made an impact in SuperSport colours and has transformed the team into a winning machine that beat Orlando Pirates 6–1 in a league game and beat them again in the Nedbank Cup.

Under his tutelage, SuperSport has become the team to beat this season and are serious Absa Premiership title contenders, currently sitting pretty at number three on the log.
