The Class of 97 at Roedean School in Houghton celebrate their 20-year reunion in style

Roedean old girls catch up at the Rand Club in Joburg.

The Rand Club in downtown Joburg was the venue for an elaborate 20-year reunion party, that brought old friends and classmates from Roedean School in Houghton within earshot of one another once again on 3 March.

The ladies of the Class of 97 were all adorned in dazzling garments befitting of the youth that they had preserved over the past two decades. One former Roedeanian came from as far afield as Australia to be at the reunion. Jennifer Earl-Moore travelled a staggering 11 748km, after a two-decade absence from her country of birth.

In conversation with City Buzz, Earl-Moore reminisced about all the celebratory gatherings she’s missed out on over the years. “The reason why I travelled so far is because I’ve been out of the country for so long. I left just before my 19th birthday,” she said. “I’ve missed 21st birthdays and weddings, so for me it was really important to come back and see all my friends now.”

Earl-Moore, who attended Roedean School for two years in Grade 11 and matric, said despite the short time she spent at the school, long-lasting friendships and bonds were formed. “We’ve always [strived] to maintain contact, no digital world or digital world, there’s always been a steady flow of contact,” she added.

Speaking on the importance of the reunion, fellow Roedeanian India Butler said, “It is interesting to see how people have changed and how they haven’t really changed.

“… we used to sing jolly-hockey-sticks songs about 20 years ago. There were lessons after school to teach you all the traditional songs, and I think that’s the other significance of the event.”
