#HillbrowShooting: Suspect to appear in court today

The man arrested in connection with the murder of the family of five in Hillbrow a little over two weeks ago, is set to make an appearance in the Joburg Magistrate’s Court this morning [10 March].

The 29-year-old suspect, whose identity has not yet been revealed, is faced with five murder charges following the execution-style killings of two minors – a boy of eight and a child of 15 months – and three women in their ninth floor Madison Square apartment in Hillbrow on the evening of 20 February.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Mavela Masondo, the suspect will also face charges of possession of two illegal firearms and ammunition.

“Following numerous tip-offs from the community, and an intensive investigation by the Gauteng Police Tracing Unit, the suspect was arrested in Hillbrow on 8 March, before leading police to a house in Alexandra where he is believed to have been in hiding,” said Masondo.

“Although he has not made an admission, he showed complete cooperation.”

At the suspect’s Alexandra residence, police recovered two handguns believed to have been used in the crime. “The firearms were recovered with live rounds, and in both instances had their serial numbers filed off,” Masondo said.

In earlier reports, City Buzz reported that the suspect was known to the family. Masondo confirmed this information, citing, “Police have established that the suspect was known to the victims, and is also originally from KwaZulu-Natal, as was the case with the victims. We cannot confirm, however, what relationship he had with the victims at this stage,” he added.

Masondo extended thanks to the community for coming forward with information that assisted in the arrest of the suspect.
City Buzz will issue updates as further developments become available.
