New kid on the block

NEW IN TOWN: Musique enters the music industry with his first single, Zi ryt iGalz.

Musa Ngobeni, who now goes by the name, Musique, is a singer, songwriter and percussionist based in the City of Gold.

As a child, Ngobeni enjoyed singing contemporary pop and RnB and became interested in the likes of Brian McKnight, R.Kelly, Boys II Men, NSYNC and Blackstreet Boys, in addition to prominent local singers such as Jeff Maluleke, Umanji and Chris Hlungwane.

As a teen, music was important to the aspiring musician, but he chose to pursue a degree in journalism at the University of Johannesburg before pursuing his life-long dream.

“I recall being a youngster coming to Joburg with the hope that I would hook up with a band and make it big, only to be humbled by my studies that needed more attention, to the detriment of my first love – music,” he said.

While he has been associated with a number of bands in his earlier days, Musique was propelled to pursue a solo career after befriending other industry talents.

Last year would prove to be the year of Musique as he released his debut single Zi ryt iGalz, which is the urban slang way for a male to ask a group of girls if they’re having a good time.

The up-and-coming musician, who’s music has reached the top of a number of download charts, describes his sound as a mixture of genres.

“People can expect a fusion of RnB, hip-hop, Afrosoul and Nigerian highlife music,” he said.

Following the success of his first single, Musique is currently working on a highly collaborative debut album where he teams up with a number of local acts in addition to international musicians from Cameroon and Nigeria.

Local musician, Theop never doubted the talent he had found in Musique. “We always knew that he was special and that at some point he would have to be [at] the forefront. That time is now,” said Theop.
