Heritage Month is celebrated through art

Photo: Supplied MAKE A CHANGE: The Ichikowitz Family Foundation will launch its Heritage Art Collection, a series of exhibitions, to celebrate Heritage Month.

The foundation promotes nation building by providing platforms that give people a chance to invest in the future of Africa, as well as promoting the use of art as a tool for dialogue. The Heritage Art Collection is the largest of its kind, with paintings by South African artists that date as far back as 1970.

The foundation has partnered with art curator and administrator of the Alex ArtSmart Brand, Vika Mjoka, to create Art Crosses Borders –Conversations. It’s reported that the foundation loved Mjoka’s efforts to make the first professional art gallery in Alexandra, which is the original home of many South African artists’ works.

Art Crosses Borders – Conversations offers an opportunity for young, self-taught artists from Alexandra to exhibit their works alongside other inspirational works by artistic veterans such as David Koloane, Nat Mokgosi and Winston Saoli. The exhibition, which is the first of the series of exhibitions from the Heritage Art Collection, will run from 6 to 19 September at the Alexandra ICT Centre, 34 3RD Road, Marlboro Industrial, Alexandra.

Ivor Ichikowitz of the foundation commented on the significance of the collection. “Heritage forms one of the four key pillars of the foundation’s activities. South Africa’s transition was no miracle – it happened because of dialogue and people ‘finding’ each other on a human level.”

The second in this series of exhibitions, A Fine Line, launches at Constitution Hill on 29 October and is an artful interpretation of our country’s transition to democracy. It also showcases works by Dean Simon as a thought-provoking multi-media experience to foster learning and education, as it includes a four-week high school programme at Constitution Hill and an outreach programme to pupils of rural high schools.
