Metro police increase visibility to ‘protect women’

The City of Johannesburg’s Metro police is working on an operational plan to increase its visibility to help curb violence against women.

This according to Public Safety MMC, Michael Sun, in light of recent reports of violence against women in and around Joburg.

“Less than a month ago, Karabo Mokoena was brutally murdered and her burnt body was found inside a bin. This past week, the bodies of three murdered women, who were allegedly also raped, were found in Soweto,” Sun said.

“In addition to this, a woman who is three months pregnant was allegedly raped by 11 men on Monday in the inner city.

“[These] reports of violence against women in our City are a cause for great concern and must be condemned in the strongest of terms.”

The MMC said that while criminal investigations fall under the mandate of the South African Police Service, the Metro police will do all it can to support and protect residents.

Along with the operational plan, the department will also work with local policing forums to ensure that they are alerted to any crimes within their communities in order to act swiftly.

On 17 May, the Metro police welcomed an additional 117 officers. They will soon be joined by an additional 1 500 officers.

“Our residents, and especially our women and children, have the right to live in an environment where they are safe, respected and protected,” Sun added.

If you suspect a crime is being committed, you can report it to 011 375 5911 or 080 075 3342.
