140 suspects arrested in Joburg during weekend anti-crime operation

LONG ARM OF THE LAW: A policeman frisks a motorist during crime combating operations conducted in various parts of Joburg from 12 to14 May.

It’s all about active patrolling, extensive stop and searches and around the clock visible policing.

These were just some of the crime-fighting measures employed by various Joburg Central Cluster Police Units in an effort to combat crime in various hotspots from 12 to 14 May.

The policing effort resulted in a total of 140 suspects being arrested for various offences.

The suspects were arrested in several locations in and around Joburg including Mondeor, Booysens, Moffatview, Langlaagte, Fairlands, Sophiatown, Brixton and the Financial District. Speaking on some of the arrests made, spokesperson for Joburg Central Police, Captain Xoli Mbele said, “Among the suspects who were arrested during the operations, one suspect was arrested for rape, nine for common robbery, six for domestic violence, three for malicious damage to property, seven for possession of suspected stolen property, three for fraud, one for armed robbery, two for possession of a stolen motor vehicle, 22 for possession of drugs and two for dealing in liquor without a licence.”

The rest of the suspects were arrested for committing other crimes ranging from theft, common assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), shoplifting and drunken driving. Suspects are expected to appear in various Magistrate’s Court around the Johannesburg area throughout the week.

Mbele stressed that extensive policing efforts would be commonplace, and urged the public to report anyone who they suspect of contravening the law. “As the eyes and ears of the police, we’d like to urge the public to come forward with any information that might lead to the arrest of anyone who terrorises or causes grief within the community by committing acts of lawlessness.”
